It’s official: It Ends With Us has achieved box office success, generating $30 million in profit. While this success might suggest that a sequel is on the horizon, Variety reports that, despite the availability of a sequel book, the prospects for a follow-up film are slim. Sources have indicated that a collaboration between Blake Lively and her co-star and director, Justin Baldoni, is unlikely in the future.

“This is uncharted territory, and no one knows what a sequel might look like,” a source close to the film’s production shared. “There’s probably no chance these two will work together again.”

Colleen Hoover’s sequel, It Starts With Us, could serve as a basis for a movie, but the ongoing feud between Lively and Baldoni may prevent it from being adapted for the big screen. It Ends With Us has become the highest-grossing film in both Baldoni and Lively’s careers, surpassing Five Feet Apart and Green Lantern.

Adding complexity to the situation is the fact that Baldoni’s production company, Wayfarer Studios, holds the film rights to both It Ends With Us and It Starts With Us.

“I felt like he understood the book and the importance of bringing it to the screen,” Hoover previously told Variety.

Baldoni has addressed the possibility of a sequel and suggested he might not be involved if It Starts With Us moves forward.

“I think there are better people for that,” he told Entertainment Tonight at the It Ends With Us premiere. “I think Blake Lively’s ready to direct.”

Even before the film’s premiere, Baldoni was questioned about a potential sequel. He mentioned to Variety that he hadn’t “even begun to think that far ahead” and was focusing on the present.

As fans followed the unfolding conflict between Baldoni and Lively, there were claims that they clashed over the final cut of the film, with Lively’s preferred version making it to theaters.
